CEFR level guide
What is C1 English?
An advanced user who can use English flexibly for study and work, including at university.
At C1, a learner can usually…
- Read long, demanding articles and pick up what the writer implies but doesn't say.
- Speak at length on unfamiliar topics without stopping to hunt for words.
- Take part in seminars, follow lectures and write essays at university.
- Organise complex ideas in writing, with clear paragraphs and linking.
These descriptions are our own summary of the CEFR, written for families. They are not official exam wording.
