Academics

Average class up to GCSE 18; pupil–teacher ratio 18:1 (GSG 2026). 2025: GCSE 43% 9–7; A level 43% A*/A and 70% A*–B; IB average 36 (GSG 2026). Sixth Form students choose A levels/BTEC or the IB.

Where leavers go

More than 60% of sixth-formers go to Russell Group or top-20 universities, such as York, Manchester, Durham, Exeter, Edinburgh, LSE, UCL and King's College London (GSG 2026).

Recognition

Latest ISI routine inspection (29 Oct 2024): all standards met. Former pupils include Sir Frederick Lugard (Governor of Hong Kong and founder of the University of Hong Kong), Sir Thomas Beecham (conductor, founder of the Royal Philharmonic) and Leslie Charteris (creator of The Saint).

For international families

There are 309 boarders (271 full-time), and about a quarter of families are from overseas. Entry is by tests in English, Maths and non-verbal reasoning, a handwritten personal statement and an interview with the Head (GSG 2026). Every international pupil must have a UK-resident guardian over 21, chosen by the parents from an AEGIS-accredited organisation (or a close relative living in the UK). International pupils can start in September, January or April. Sixth Form entry needs at least five GCSE/IGCSE passes at grades 5–9 (school).
