What the HKDSE is, in UK terms
The Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) is Hong Kong's school-leaving qualification, run by the HKEAA. Every candidate takes four core subjects and chooses electives, and results are reported in levels from 1 up to 5**.
UCAS, the UK's university admissions service, publishes a tariff entry for the HKDSE. Universities decide for themselves how they use it, so always read the entry requirements on each course page rather than relying on a general conversion.
How UCAS works
Undergraduate applications to UK universities go through one online application with UCAS. You list your course choices (up to five), write one personal statement, and a referee supplies a reference. Universities then reply through UCAS.
Deadlines differ by course and are published by UCAS. Some courses have earlier deadlines, often well before the course starts, so check the current dates on the UCAS timeline page rather than a date copied from elsewhere.
English-language evidence
Timeline from Form 5 to arrival
- Form 5: choose electives with your intended degree in mind and look at the subject requirements of courses you like.
- Form 6, early: shortlist universities and courses, check each English-language requirement and begin the personal statement.
- Ask your referee, then submit the UCAS application before the deadline UCAS publishes for your courses.
- Receive replies through UCAS. Offers may be conditional on your HKDSE results and on English-language evidence.
- Sit the HKDSE, then meet the conditions of your chosen offer.
- Apply for a Student visa once the university gives you what it needs to support it, then arrange accommodation and travel.
- Arrive and enrol.
Stages in order. Dates are set by UCAS, the universities and the UK government, so we give the order, not dates.
